My work emerges from landscape – but is just as much about the enjoyment of
what paint will do. The images are never from direct observation and are
constrained only by an idea of earth and sky. The work is often textural and
this guides the movement and build up of paint - which seems to offer it’s
own ideas as the work progresses. I play the surface in an intuitive and
gestural way, until some sense of space or remembered place is revealed.
Maybe for this reason the apparent view point often seems detached, hovering
high up, giving a ‘bird’s eye’ view.

| Print based works
Collograph plates are built up with collaged fragments, grit, thickened
paint etc, in a similar approach to my more textural mixed media paintings.
These plates are then sealed and run through my home made press to produce
an initial rudimentary image. I then work into this extensively with oil
paint, watercolour, inks etc. Each print is therefore a unique
print-painting hybrid rather than part of a conventional print series. |

I often draw on the visual symbolism of landscape and the sea - shifting
sands and uncertain boundaries.
2D works have a topographical quality.
3D ‘Blueprint boats’ are makeshift structures stitched together with
flotsam, eroded and patched, imprinted and encoded, full of references - but
remaining empty.
