Are women of a particular age and size really invisible?

A series that started by considering this observation is now evolving to explore our ever-increasing intolerances. Some of this work takes the human form as a starting point - for example 'Figured landscape' and 'My name is not important' - while others use some other visual form to explore a human emotional issue.

I use a variety of media, guided by the concept of the piece. I have a first-class degree in textile design specialising in print and surface embellishment and this usually finds its way into my paintings.

'Magnolia' - the flower of Shanghai - was inspired by a visit to China and seeing a people being pulled between two cultures: communism and consumerism.

'Don't be shy' reflects on issues of self-esteem closer to home and used the hellebore whose stunning 'face' seems so often focussed on the ground.

I also enjoy looking at plants in man-made settings like formal gardens and allotments; amused at how we try to inflict order...and nature inevitably  rebels! Hence a series called 'Unruly gardens' where tulips refuse to stand upright and strawberry plants wander about all over the place! (see 'Wild strawberries').
