Catherine Slater at the 'Gallery Upstairs'

Personal History:

I studied Sculpture for three years and History of Art for one year as part of an Honours degree in Education and Art.  In 1997 I completed the four year City and Guilds course in Creative Studies and Embroidery Skills.  Since then I have been a part-time tutor in feltmaking and also run freelance workshops as well as developing and exhibiting my own work in the UK and Europe

I create pictures and wall hangings in series. Each series is a response to a place or an idea that has significance for me.

Intangible Textures Series

I am intrigued by the notion of there being “textures” that we can see with eye and brain but that we can never experience through touch either because the scale is too great, the object too distant, the act of touching would destroy the surface or because the “surface” itself is an illusion. We are surrounded by these apparent textures which evoke a emotive response but which we can never experience in a physical way.

 Seascapes

I was brought up by the sea and miss it greatly. I find the rhythm of the tides very soothing .  My pictures are a personal response to the wave patterns, the way they change the light on the surface and the shifting edge where the sea meets the land.

 The  Meadow Series

This began with one piece for “The Climate Is Changing” an exhibition beginning at the Museo Del Tessuto in Prato, Italy, May 2010 and then touring for 2 years. It has since developed into a series that is changing as the seasons move on and the meadows themselves change.
